Senator John C. Danforth Speaks On Faith And Morals

By Stephen Condren On Monday, September 25, 2006 Senator John C. Danforth spoke to the Chicago Council on Global Affairs. His topic was Faith and Politics: How the Moral Values Debate Divides America and How to Move Forward Together The event drew a large audience at the Millennium Knickerbacker in Chicago. The senators fame gave him good response. However, the speech was a disappointment. There was really nothing new that he had to offer. He clearly addressed the current state of affairs with regards to the split in moral sentiment with regard to religion. Clearly there is tension in the air with this subject. The senator spoke at length about how deeply divided Congress is over religion and the ethics of the political right. The Republican Party has embraced the Religious Right where at the Democratic Party has embraced left wing views on God and Religion. The concern for Mr. Danforth is bring things back to a more stable balance as we had before in Congress. The polarity is too high and the atmosphere is tense. Mr. Danforth is an ordained Episcopal priest and holds traditional mainstream church views. There is nothing new in his message. After the lecture there was a private dinner held for him. At the dinner he was asked what his current Theological views were. He responded with traditional Protestant values. Sadly his grasp for an ever expanding religious horizon is limited. The answer to issues in the new age of Theology and World Religions is not in the hands of the Christian Church, God is so much greater in scope. I was born and raised on the south side of Chicago in Hyde Park Township, near the University of Chicago. As I child I was always drawing and painting. My father owned an art supply company, Favor Ruhl & Watson, where I was able to get all that I needed to progress in my work. I have always enjoyed portraiture and landscape painting. In High School (Naperville Central High School) I took Drafting from Mr. Pierce. I quickly grasped the principles of perspective and drafting and hence made a career with both Fine Art and Architectural Renderings. In the mid 1970's I joined the US Navy and was stationed on board the USS Midway, CV-41. The Midway was home ported in Yokosuka, Japan (A suburb of Tokyo). While in service I traveled all over Asia including such countries as Korea, China, Philippines, Singapore, Pakistan, Hong Kong, and Japan. While in Japan I learned Japanese. I speak German and Spanish as well.
