Diets for Weight Loss

By Jean Lam After the Christmas and New Years holidays, it seems that most people return from their resting places with a few more pounds on, and who am I to judge them? If I myself ate to the verge of exploding, and drank as if every single beverage was running out. It is perfectly understandable why people gain some weight during these days, however it is also perfectly understandable that people want to lose those very pounds by the time the New Year has begun, I mean, that is why the New Years resolutions are for right? You will notice that most of the people that actually wrote their New Year Resolution wrote this line: To lose some weight before summer. Why? Because they are probably planning to attend the beach, and every single person alive wants to look great in a bathing suit. This is where those popular and famous diets for weight loss come into action; there are many eating routines which claim to make you lose dozens of pounds just by eating whatever you want, but if that was the case, everyone would be perfectly fit, dont you agree? The truth behind diets for weight loss is that they consist of a perfectly balanced intake of nutrients, which is why they claim that you can eat whatever it is that you want, given that you do not consume more than you should (which sometimes may be just a small bite). Diets for weight loss are not poorly developed, at least not all of them, however if you are truly aiming to reach your weight loss goal, then you should compliment that weight loss diet with an exercise routine that may allow you to burn the excessive amount of fat that you have been holding in your body for the last few months or years. People who watch and manage what they eat, are not only benefited by the weight loss bonuses, they are also benefited from a healthier kind of life, and a lower risk of heart problems. Here is what you should do when following a weight loss procedure: First of all you will need to keep those calories under control, no more than 1000 per day, and you will also need to practice an exercise routine; run until you get tired, then walk, once you recover start running again and repeat the process for 1 hour or 2, this is called a cardiovascular exercise routine, and it is the fastest method for burning fat. The Healing Touch

By Ann Stewart Touch is of utmost importance in the healing process. Whether youre down with the flu or lying sick in a hospital bed, the one thing you crave most is a gentle touch, a warm hug, a mothers kiss on the sore spot with the assurance that it is all better. Yet, you are so often caught up with mixed emotions, like I have the flu; I better not hug anyone. Let me share a story of a woman who was actually banned from society and was considered unclean according to the health law and custom of her day. This lady had a bleeding condition for years and, after spending all her money on doctors, there was no hope left. But... she had heard of Jesus and how he healed all that were sick. (mat. 8:16; luke 8: 45- 49) She had only one thing on her mind. She knew that she knew that she knew she would get healed. If only she could somehow break through the throngs of people following Him and get close to Him, she was convinced that she would receive her healing. She knew that she could be stoned to death for approaching anyone in her present condition. In fact, she was required to wear special clothing that set her apart so that everyone would know she was unclean. Giving no thought to the fear that was in her mind, she had only one goal, and that was to get her healing. Crawling low through the crowd, she strained and reached with all the strength left in her, all the while saying to herself: if I may but touch the hem of his garment, I shall be whole. Over and over she repeated those words out loud. They empowered her to greater and greater faith. She saw in her minds eye, and heard, the desired end result constantly. There! She did it! She just touched the hem of Jesus garment and instantly the bleeding stopped. Then a voice boomed through the crowd: who touched me? Jesus now turned facing her; his disciples surprised that He should ask the question with hundreds of people all around. Realizing He knew that it was she who had touched Him, she faced Him and acknowledged out loud to everyone what she had done and that she was healed. Jesus assured her: Daughter, be of good comfort; your faith has made you whole. Go in peace Although all sick people who had come to Him were healed, very few had the faith that she had, and Jesus knew this instantly. This woman received the healing she came for at the moment of her touch. Jesus, however, to reward her strong faith, went much further than healing her sickness. He declared that she was now also whole! That encompasses everything! Not only physical healing of one ailment, but also any other type of healing, like possibly her extreme fatigue due to the prolonged loss of blood, feelings of rejection, fear, and the depletion of all her finances. Every need she possibly had was met due to her faith! Are you in need of a healing touch? Go ahead, speak out loud words of faith to yourself, like she did. Then, do not listen to the thoughts of doubt and fear and cant dos. Press in, reach out, and He will reward your faith! Banana Creme Crunch Bar at Starbucks; Yummy

By Lance Winslow Thank God for global warming and climate change - this is wonderful! Do you know that banana crops are up because of the more tropical weather around our globe? This means that banana prices are coming down because bananas are going bananas and growing faster than rabbits. Luckily for our ancestors the chimpanzees and gorillas they are happy to. And do you know what else this means? It means that banana cream crunch bars at Starbucks are now available like never before and the prices are not very high and they are extremely good. I recently went into a Starbucks and ask them about the banana cream crunch bar and they gave me a sample to try and a couple to take home to write this article and to make sure that I got my facts straight on exactly how great they tasted. And yes they are indeed yummy. Ah the benefits of being a writer! Now you're probably asking what about the nutritional factors, amounts of fat, diet fiber and protein. Yes well, good question and I thank you for participating today and asking this question, it is good to see the citizens of the United States of America are concerned about their diets and the obesity problem which is pervasive in our society today. So, you know what, I did ask them about these things and it turns out that the banana cream crunch bar at Starbucks coffee only has 42 grams of fat and the dietary fiber is 30 grams and the protein is 7 g. So, all in all the banana cream crunch bar at Starbucks gets two thumbs up from Lances product review project and Writing for Food Scandal. Considers this in 2006 and go bananas! Travel Fraud - What to Look For

By Michael Russell Many con artists snare their marks by promising huge discounts that sound plausible, particularly since many travel suppliers today offer booking bargains and last-minute deals to recover sales lost after the September 11 tragedies. The following red flags show that you've been targeted by a travel scam artist. - The seller will not give you anything in writing describing the trip until you have paid up front. Always insist on material in the mail before you pay a dime, in deposits, fees, or charges of any kind. Absolutely refuse to pay any money at all to a travel seller before you have this material in hand. Ask them to send complete details on the trip, including total price, service charges, processing fees, surcharges and any other hidden or undisclosed fees or charges, the components of the trip (particularly the specific hotels, airline flights, cruise ships and other services involved) and penalties for canceling or changing the trip plans and "blackout dates" - The seller pressures you to make an immediate decision. Always refuse any high-pressure sales pitches that prevent you from shopping around with other travel retailers. - The seller asks for your credit card number or bank account number over the phone. Never give out this kind of information over the phone unless you called the travel retailer yourself, you know the retailer and you are completely confident in the company. All it takes is your credit card number and expiration date for the most inexperienced scam artist to make fraudulent charges on your credit card and with your bank account number, a scam artist can even transfer funds directly from your account. - The seller tells you that you just won a prize or a trip in a contest that is news to you. If you can't remember registering for a sweepstake, you probably didn't. The promised trip is most likely a fraud or at the very least a gimmick with a ton of hidden costs and/or restrictions. - The seller says that you can claim your prize by paying a small administrative fee. A reputable contest or sweepstake will never require you to pay a fee to collect a prize. In fact, many states prohibit this by law. Refuse to pay any amount of money to collect any prize or trip. If you have to pay for it, it's not much of a prize, is it? - The seller asks you to make a bank transfer, send a certified check or money order, or prepare a check to be picked up by a courier. By using cash equivalents or receiving funds using delivery methods other than the U.S. Postal Service, scam artists are trying to take advantage of perceived loopholes in federal regulations prohibiting fraud via phone and mail. - You cannot book the deal through any other travel retailer. If you are told that you have to purchase the package directly from the seller - that the deal is so good you can't buy it anywhere else - odds are something isn't on the level. Though this is not an exhaustive list, these are some of the major Red Flags to look for when offered what seems to be a great deal. Keep your eyes open, because believe me, they are looking for you. Funniest Pond Stories-Part 1, May 2004

By Brett Fogle Get ready for some gut-wrenching, laugh out loud hilarious pond
stories from all over the world... (Continued from May Issue of PondStuff!) We had some hilarious, truly gut wrenching, laugh out-loud
stories sent in by some of you. Here we're going to highlight
some of the funniest stories for you to read. We had entries from all over the place (Inluding one all the way
from THAILAND!) The competition was fierce, and to be honest - I
had a really hard time deciding on one 'funniest' story, but
here's a brief rundown of our entries: cats, dogs, and bunnies
(?) all taking the Nestea plunge right into the water, a hungry
KOI nibbling in dangerous territory, a missing flip flop, an
electrifying experience for grandma, fun for the whole family,
fish frape, and flying fish to boot! First, let's start with this very funny story about 'Smokey' -
who apparently thinks he can walk on water. This was sent in by
Mike Lachance from Maryland: Funny Pond Story #1 "I wish I had a photo to share of this very true story but any
ponder with cats has likely had the same experience at some time
or another. Several years ago, when I was enjoying the second
season of my first pond (I have now built four as I've moved
around), one of our cats, "Smokey", who was a natural hunter in
her prime, saw a mockingbird alight on a lilly pad to get a drink
of water. Well, old "Smokester" slowly crept out from under some
day lillies and made a spectacular jump with all four paws
majestically carrying her like a flying squirrel, right for that
intruding bird. It is not as though she had not already had a couple of
encounters with the water but that day the feathered treat must
have been too much for her to pass up. Well, both my wife and I
were there to see her make a wonderful belly flop into the pond. Of course, the bird was out of the way in plenty of time and I
swear that that cat walked on her toes the five feet it took her
to get out of the water! And of course, after removing herself
from the water, in a very nonchalant manner, proceeded to lift
each leg, shake off the water and as much as say "I meant to do
that, you know". Smokey often spent time at the pond later, using her tail to
attract the fish (she would put it in the water and swish it
around and the fish would come up to explore it. She never did
catch one). She also loved to sit at the waterfall and enjoy the
water moving past her. So that is my funny pond story. === Funny Pond Story #2 "Dear all at McArthur, My funniest pond story is about my late aunt, who introduced me
to the joy of backyard ponds. Donna had a large koi pond in her
backyard that she devoted endless amounts of love and attention
to. As happens with most ponds, spring brought some uninvited
guests...in this case frogs. One evening Donna was working on the
pond, checking the cantankerous pump and filter system, and using
her net to skim out leaves and what not that had blown in. My 80+ plus year old grandmother was supervising the work and
offering her expert opinion on how to proceed. They were amazed
at the number of frogs that had taken up residence, and not too
happy about it. Donna noticed a frog swimming at the far side of
the pond that she wanted to get out...something was not quite
right about the way he was swimming, and she pointed him out to
Grandma. "Mom, look at that frog swimming on his back!" Grandma
was a bit skeptical...frogs doing the back stroke were a
phenomenon that she was unfamiliar with. She advised that this misfit should be removed immediately. Don't
want to give the other little froggies strange ideas. Donna made
several attempts at scooping the miscreant up with her net, but
he was just out of reach. Only one thing left to do. Roll up your
shorts and wade in after him. The answer to Mr. Frogs strange
swimming technique became painfully obvious as soon as Donna
reached his immediate vacinity....a faulty under water light had
shorted and electrocuted him! Donna didn't need her electric
rollers for a few days after that!" Enecia Sabroff Funny Pond Story #3 "Hello----My husband recently bought a beagle puppy, at this time
he was 8 weeks old. My husband also bought two almost, semi-tame
rabbits to help train the puppy to track rabbits. At this time I
only had one pond that was preformed 550 gallons, my husband put
one of the rabbits out to platy with the puppy, the rabbit was
teasing the puppy, running a little ways then jumping over his
head, then the rabbit decided he didn't want to play anymore so
he started to run from Bear (the puppy), and he dove into the
pond. We were thinking that Bear would go around the pond to
the other side and continue chasing the bunny, but Bear just dove
right in, he was so little though that he had to be rescued from
the small backyard pond. My husband's only response was "he's
going to be a good rabbit dog!" Well, thanks for listening to
my story. Sincerely, Roberta Collins Toledo, Ohio Funny Pond Story #4 "A story to share... Two years ago I started with the crazy idea of building a small
pond with koi fishes. After a lot of working I finally built it,
and decorated it with all sort of plants. One day... mi female
cat Manchita went to the pond to examine this new
construction. She went to the border, jumped on a flat stone and
starter to drink water. To her big surprise one of the fishes ,
possibly thinking that the white nose of my cat was food, jumped
out of the water, trying to eat it.. Can you imagine the
surprise of the cat ? I believe that the fish was also quite
impressed with the experience. My cat almost fell into the pond ,
.. and from then on she never went around the pond again. She
used to watch the pond from my dorm, located in the second floor
and just across the pond. Unfortunately I did not take a picture
of this accident. I am sending you a pictute of this first
pond; in the meantime I did build another, larger one.
Unfortunately Manchita is not around any more, she passed away
a few month ago, from old age.. This story happened in Valdivia,
a city located in the south of Chile. In this country winter is
approaching, with lots of leaves falling from the trees an the
plants in my pond preparing themselves to sleep for a while..."
Maria Fresard == Funny Pond Story #5 "I have two ponds. An upper and lower pond. The upper pond is fed
by a waterfall with the source being the lower pond (driven by a
pump). The lower pond is fed by an overflow of the upper pond
that flows underground for about 70 feet (12 in drain pipe). Last
summer I rescued some trout fingerlings from a seasonal stream
going dry near my home. I put them in the lower pond. This spring
I was sitting in my kitchen and could see something flopping on
my water fall. The trout had migrated up the overflow tube and
were trying to swim further upstream via the water falls. No so
funny but does show the strength of nature. Just a few weeks ago,
Egrets found the pond and the fish. There is nothing left to migrate at this time. Not so funny but
does an Egret taste anything like a turkey when cooked?" Tom Gegenheimer == Funny Pond Story #6 "We have only had a pond for a short time ... details can be seen
at http://thailand4life.net/smithgarden/ The funny story must include the workmen (in Thailand) who took
zero safety precautions when constructing the pond. Watching guys shovelling concrete from a lorry and spreading it
across the bottom of the pond ... when the footwear they had was
just 'flip-flops' resulted in great entertainment .... especially
when. several times, the flip flops came off and were lost in the
cement somewhere (eventually found while they walked around bare
footed) .... pictures at http://thailand4life.net/smithgarden/images/large/DSC03062.jpg
http://thailand4life.net/smithgarden/images/large/DSC03070.jpg
http://thailand4life.net/smithgarden/images/large/DSC03060.jpg Strangely it was only the guys .... the women laborers all wore
Wellington boots .... maybe this reflects on which of the sexes
is really the most sensible?" Regards, Chris == Funny Pond Story #7 "I am building a pond at this time and I was in the process of
building a waterfall in the corner of a fence. The waterfall is
about 3 feet high and 7 feet wide. I thought I was finishing up
the waterfall with some flat rock on the very top. So I
straddeled thewaterfall with my knees on the second ledge and set
the flat rock on top. When I did this the whole waterfall fell
down because I build it on blocks and not a pile of dirt. When it fell one big rock caught my foot and I slide down the
fall and fell backwards into the pond going all the way under and
had a couple of big rocks come down on me. Meanwhile my wife is
laughing her butt of at me and I asked her to help me out she
slipped on the flat wet rock that surounded the ponds edge and
half way fell in with me. Now my two boys were playing in the yard they are 5 and 3 and saw
this happen to us and they thought it was time to got swimming so
guess who jumped into the pond with us, the boys. Nothing like
having the whole family in on the pond. We laughed for awhile but
then I had to rebuild the whole waterfall again and this time I
put the top rocks on from the side." Robert H Coppa Jr. == Funny Pond Story #8 I decided 300 gallons would be perfect. I did all the math and
spent a great deal of time working with more experienced
ponders. Somehow when it was all said and done my little 300
gallon pond ended up being 810 gallons and come to find out it
was yet another one of my mathematical errors. Guess I should
have paid more attention in that college level math class
required for my Associates, right. We got the pond all up and running but because of the
miscalculation we now needed a bigger pump to feed the waterfall
so I went to our local water garden supplier and asked which one
to get. Budget was a concern so it was recommended that we got a
HP submersible pump that cycles 44 gallons a minuet. It was
only $70 in comparison to the $170 one that was its comparative
alternative so we went that route. $70 dollars later we had a
working pond with a beautiful waterfall! I was so excited I could
hardly wait to get fish. Again budget was a concern so we went to the local pet store and
picked up $50 dollars worth of fish, about 8 fish. 4 large gold
Koi, some yellow and a blue Koi. The color excited me so much I
never considered what would happen when the fish became
comfortable in their new home. The swam around investigating for
a day or two then started to come up missing. I had it figured
that they were hiding or that a cat was getting fed to well but I
never figured it was something I could have done. It was the
pump the intake valve on the pump was to large and the fish were
getting to close and being sucked into the pump though the motor
pushed down the hose into my waterfall. While this is not a funny story, I must have cried for 3 days, I
wanted to share it because this is the one thing I never read
anything about in all the 6 weeks of reading I did on the web. I
can chuckle about it now with a I cant believe I didnt think
of that thought. Had I known this was possible I would have done something to
prevent it by caging in my pump or spending the extra $100 to
get the right kind of pump. Hope someone else can save a Koi by my blending experience. Thanks, New to ponds and already thinking of making it fish free!" Sheri

Staying Power

By Dixit Chanana How do your define marketing? What is the basic idea that works in your mind when you go for marketing your product? Is the idea just selling and so, increasing your profits? If yes, then you may be wrong in your approach to marketing your product. the nature of today's consumers has become most volatile. At any given time, he can switch to another product that offers him a bit more comfort than yours. That's because all your past efforts that led him purchase your product last time around haven't been successful in long run. So what is the mantra for long-term success in the market? That mantra is fairly simple. And in Hindi it is called apnapan. Have you ever wondered why a student wants to attend the class of a particular teacher and bunk another's. It is not because of the topic or the subject being taught, but how it is taught. It is about how a particular topic is presented. That presentation makes students want to attend the class. Because the student feels there is something to gain. The same holds true for the market. If you are treating your customer just as a means to raise your sales and profits then your success in the market is surely going to be short lived as you are not deploying the right tools that lead your customer to purchase your product again. So before entering the market make your purpose clear. Be clear in your mind that from now on whatever you are going to do will lead to strengthening your relationship with your customer. Try to develop a culture in your organisation that is consumer-friendly and not just sales friendly, because it is ultimately the consumer who will determine the fate of all the employees from top to bottom who are working in your organization. Now, where do we go from here? Should we treat the customer as the king? No. Then what? Make your customer a friend. Do something that will make your customer a loyal friend of yours. Redefine your objectives? Concentrate on the efforts that make your customer feel proud and satisfied with the brand he is going to buy. If this happens, then one thing is guaranteed and that is your staying power in the market The author of this article holds the degree of Masters in Business Adminstration. Where Did All the Low-Carb Diets Go?

By Mike Singh With all the emphasis on low-carb diets that made the news for so long, it seems that the emphasis on low-carb is not as prevalent as it once was. Why is this? Where did the low-carb diets go? The popularity of Atkins and the South Beach diets may come and go, but the bottom line is that any successful diet--whether low-carb, low-fat, body type, blood type, or whatever the gimmick--has one thing in common. It cuts calories. Low-carb diets cut calories by reducing carbohydrate intake. Low fat diets reduce calories by reducing fats. Another problem with fad diets is that everyone has something different to say, which only adds confusion. Many dieters are so bombarded with conflicting information that they no longer know who or what to believe. When the fad diets are written by doctors, as both Atkins and South Beach are, it can be even more confusing. The trick is to get through the diet hype to the real information that is useful. In the simplest terms, the only way to lose weight is to take fewer calories in than are used. In order to lose a pound of fat in a week, daily caloric intake must be reduced by 500 calories. This can be accomplished through food intake or in a combination of reducing food intake and increasing exercise. However, even when you are reducing calories, you need to eat a healthful balance of foods to get the nutrients you need. This is where a lot of the confusion comes in. Low-carb diets restrict carbohydrate intake. Some restrict carbohydrates a great deal, while other diets are more flexible. However, carbohydrates are not only simple sugars and breads. Fruits and vegetables fall into the carbohydrate category, and both contain a wide range of healthy nutrients. The body needs proteins, carbohydrates, and fats in order to function. How much the body needs of each of these will continue to be debated. The U.S. RDA recommends fat intake between twenty to thirty-five percent of total intake, proteins between ten and thirty-five percent, and carbohydrates between forty-five and sixty-five percent. Making healthful choices within each category is essential for overall health. Your choices can also have an effect on your mental outlook as well, because if you are watching caloric intake, you will be able to eat more of low-calorie foods, which can help reduce feelings of deprivation. Often, healthier choices are lower in total calories. In general, the following tips can help you make better choices: * Limit saturated fats
* Choose a variety of fruits and vegetables
* Eat whole-grain foods as opposed to refined flours
* Eat lean meats instead of high-fat meats Exercise is also a key component to a healthy lifestyle. Most fad diets recommend some type of exercise, but many do not put a great deal of emphasis on exercising. The fact is that it is possible to lose weight with diet alone. However, diet combined with exercise is the most effective weight loss strategy, and some type of exercise is simply good for health. Exercise can help make your heart stronger, bones, and muscles stronger, all of which make even daily activities much easier. While there is no doubt that a regular exercise routine can be highly beneficial, many studies indicate that short bouts of exercise throughout the day can be just as effective as a more structured exercise program. Squeezing in just ten minutes a day in increments can be beneficial. Also, consider that exercise comes in many forms. You do not need a home gym full of equipment; even vacuuming can provide benefit. Think of little ways you can add extra activity to your day. * Park a few blocks from work and walk the rest of the way.
* Take the stairs instead of the elevator.
* Increase the intensity at which you do household chores.
* Take a few minutes to dance around the house.
* Go for a walk (all you need is a pair of shoes). In short, fad diets such as Atkins and South Beach are tempting and promise fast results. If you want the most effective weight-loss strategy, reduce calories and add exercise. In addition, while rapid weight loss is always desirable, losing a pound or two per week is a safe goal; more than this can be dangerous. Eat a wide variety of healthy foods to maintain nutrients, and remember that a healthy lifestyle is the long-term goal. A Few Words about the World of Electric Blankets

By John Gibb An electric blanket is a very valuable commodity for those that struggle during the cold winter nights. Taking advantage of electricity power, electric blankets will deliver you heat exactly where you want it, inside your bed! There are numerous types of electric blankets in the market; each one has its own characteristics. Electric blankets will vary in basic attributes such as shape, color and price. Additionally, you will also notice variations regarding some more important features such as heating method and manufacturing materials. The guide below will assist you in avoiding common mistakes that buyers do when buying electric blankets. Most electric blankets include a heat adjusting option while some of the new models will also be equipped with an option that enables the blanket to automatically turn off after a set period of time. This option is very helpful because according to specialists, its not a good practice to have the blanket turned on while you are asleep. Using this feature, you can simply program the blanket to automatically turn itself off after about one hour and you can sleep free of the idea that you will have to turn the blanket off at some point later. Then again, if you are feeling like you are going to freeze during the night, you can always leave the blanket ON, to accompany you through the whole night. Before buying your electric blanket, make sure you will have the chance to touch it and have a look at how it feels. Do you feel any wires/heating elements inside it? Is it soft enough for you? Will it fit your bed? Those are some very simple questions that you can ask to yourself; more importantly, you can also answer those questions by yourself so this is a great practice if you want to filter out a few blankets from your potential-to-buy list. This practice will greatly assist you on focusing only on blankets that are worth their price. After you have looked at the important features discussed above, you can also consider other aspects such as colors available or price. So basically, if you have a few blankets that all seem to be pretty functional, you can then help yourself make the final decision by selecting the one that best fulfills your eyes expectations or by choosing the one that will harm your pocket the least. The Wearing Of Mens Wedding Rings Today

By Donald Saunders Although the wearing of mens wedding rings is becoming increasing common today this is a relatively recent change and is still not entirely accepted by many men. It has been traditional for woman to wear wedding rings almost since history began and there are records of an exchange of rings at wedding ceremonies way back to the times of ancient Egypt. Nevertheless, it was rare for a man to wear a wedding ring following the marriage ceremony until after the Second World War. Many people have suggested that this was for purely economic reasons and that it is only the relative affluence that many societies now enjoy that has made this practice possible. There is undoubtedly some validity in this argument and it may indeed be a significant reason for men not previously wearing wedding rings, but it is certainly not the only reason. Wearing a wedding ring mean stating publicly that you are married and, while this has rarely been seen as a problem for women, many men are less than happy to advertise the fact that they are married. This is undoubtedly changing today, but still remains a strong influence for many men, while others simply wear their ring when it suits them and remove it when it does not. As an interesting aside, men in Greece and Italy are often given "puzzle" wedding rings by their brides. These rings consist of a series of interlocking metal rings that have to be arranged in a set order to form a single ring, which means that the ring cannot be quickly and easily removed or replaced. For some men the wedding ring is seen as an item of jewelry and wearing a wedding ring is viewed in much the same way as they view wearing a pair of earrings. For many men wearing jewelry is simply something that men do not do and the wedding ring is no exception. Again this is something that is becoming less of a problem over time and, while the wearing of earrings may still be some way off for most men, it is often seen as acceptable for a man to wear a ring, bracelet or a neck chain these days. In many cases, while a man may not have any particular problem with the idea of wearing a wedding ring, if he has not worn a ring before he may be concerned about whether or not he will feel comfortable with a ring and have questions about whether or not it will feel heavy or will rub. This of course is an easy matter to overcome and all he has to do is buy a cheap ring from his local jewelry store or market and wear if for a while to see. Of course one genuine problem for many men is their occupation which may exclude them from wearing a ring because of the dangers posed by operating machinery or perhaps for reasons of hygiene. This is course is not something that it confined to the wearing of mens wedding rings and effects women equally. As time goes by more and more men are adopting the habit of wearing a wedding ring and the signs are that this practice is likely to continue to grow. Give-and Take: Recipe for Success in Marriage?

By Azriel Winnett A woman once visited a counselor to ask a question about her marriage. I have a funny feeling that you might not be especially impressed with the answer she was given.

All the same, I'll take my chances. I think my shoulders are broad enough.

I stand by the counselor's response 100%.
The questioner (let's call her Jane) was married to a divorcee. Her husband (John) had to pay a certain sum of money every month to his previous wife as alimony, or whatever.
Sticky patch
He had just started a
new business and was passing through a financial sticky patch. The obligation to his ex-wife, on top of everything else, was putting John under a lot of pressure.

Jane was a working person and gladly helped to pay the family debts. She never thought twice about it. But could she be expected to contribute in this case?

Surely, reasoned Jane, her husband's financial commitment to somebody to whom he had been married previously had nothing to do with her? Yes, she and John were life partners and she was happy to
share all his burdens. But even for what happened in a previous life, so to speak? Wasn't that going too far?

"I must confess I don't really understand your question," the counselor gently told Jane after listening intently to her dilemma.

"You and John are husband and wife. John has a debt. He's struggling to pay it. What difference does it make what the debt is for? It's a debt, period!"

The counselor smiled warmly at Jane before she continued.

"His problems are your problems. You're in this together. Why on earth shouldn't you help pay the debt? If, after all, it's difficult for
you to accept this, it must be that there's some deeper problem in your marriage..."

And that's it.
Don't hit the roof!
Now, it's important not to misunderstand the counselor, or me. I don't want your blood pressure to hit the roof! We have to keep cool heads and put everything in the proper perspective.

First of all, she wasn't implying, of course, that John now had a licence to sit back, put his legs up, and meditate blissfully about the higher meaning of life, while his dear and ever obliging
spouse worked like a donkey to pay the price of his past.

Not at all. I should think that's pretty obvious, but I have to stress it just in case.

Secondly, when we talk about husband and wife being full partners in the business of living, about sharing each other's burdens - financial or otherwise - no less than each other's joys, we are not saying for one moment that either party must contribute more than is reasonable.

In the case of our story, Jane was a high-earning professional. In other instances, a wife may bring in little or no income, for any of a number of reasons. It may not be desirable that she be working at all.
And not only money!
But that's hardly the point. We're talking of quality, rather than quantity. One can only do what one can, but it's the real desire to help that counts. And contributing doesn't only mean
money.

I'll let you in on a little secret. I don't really like the use of the word PARTNER in connection with marriage.

True, we've used it up to now, for want of a better term. It does come in handy to describe a good marriage relationship, up to a point.

Yet, I hardly think that an ideal marriage relationship is a "partnership" in the same sense that we talk about a business partnership, for example. Not at all. When we think of a partnership, we usually think about a contract between two parties. A 50-50 sharing of responsibilities,or the like.
Confused?
A little confused? Well, let me explain!

Do you have children? Good! Do you love them?

"What a question!" you exclaim, "Gee, how I love them!"

"Don't you know the sacrifices we made for them? From the moment they came into this world, when they depended on us for their very survival, my spouse and I gave them our all. Just as much as a
whimper from them in the middle of the night, and we were there to attend to their needs. Even now, they may disappoint us, anger us or hurt us, but we continue to cater to their every whim...Do you
need any greater proof that we love them!"

So...is that why you've done so much for them - because you love them so much?
Wrong way round
Could be. But even more, I'd say it's the other way round: You love them so intensely BECAUSE you've done so much for them!

This is nothing more or less than human nature, and I think there's a great lesson for us here. We need to think about this very carefully.

Sometimes, when two people begin to think about marrying each other, they think in terms of some business arrangement. Whether they verbally express it that way or not, their minds work something
along these lines:

"You have needs and I have needs. Maybe, if I satisfy yours, you will satisfy mine. You wash the dishes and I'll pay the rent. Sundays to Tuesdays I'll take out the garbage, and for the remainder
of the week you will. Other duties will be divided by mutual consent. For every suit I buy, you can buy two pairs of shoes..."

If this is the marriage you want, good luck to you! It's a free world. But will you be happy? I mean, really happy? I wonder.

Many people will tell you that for a happy marriage, you need what they describe as "give-and-take".

Give and take? Nonsense! Forget about it!

What you need is "give and give." And give again. And again.

That's the royal road to happiness.

Sewing Technique - How To Sew A Spa Wrap Or Beach Cover-Up

By Marian Lewis Discover how to sew a spa wrap or beach cover-up with this simple sewing lesson. Spa wraps are great gift ideas or bazaar items, too. Sew spa wraps for all the men, women and children in your family. Everyone needs one. Use for after the shower, bath, or when you do your hair or at the spa or pool or the beach. Spa wraps have elasticized tops that can be worn above the bust or at the waist. Sewing a spa wrap is a quick and easy sewing project. All you need is a beach towel, approximately 1-1/4 yards of 1 inch to 1-1/4 inch wide sport sew through elastic and about 6 inches of hook and loop tape or large snaps. Here is the how to sew instructions. First of all, make a decision about what you want to use to sew the spa wrap. Colorful beach towels are great to use as well as fabric. Your choice may be based on what size you need the spa wrap to be. Smaller towels work well for small children. Lighter weight towels work better than heavier ones. They aren't as bulky to sew or wear and also dry faster. Sewing Tip: Always preshrink all fabrics including towels before you sew. The average beach towel is about 62 inches long x 34 inches wide. Find some good bargains at your local flea market. The length of the beach towel will generally go around most bodies with some over lap. If you need more, sew 2 towels together or add half a towel. Cut a piece of 1 inch to 1-1/4 inch wide sturdy sport sew through elastic to be about 2/3 of the length of the towel or fabric that you are using. This depends on the stretch of the elastic. Example: For a 62 inch long towel, cut the elastic about42 inches long. Divide the towel and the elastic into eighths. First fold in half, then again in fourths, then again in eighths. These smaller sections are easier to handle at the sewing machine. Pin the elastic at the eighth marks to one long edge on the wrong side of the towel. Set your sewing machine for your largest and longest zigzag stitch. As you stitch, stretch the elastic to fit each pinned section of the towel. First stitch along the outer edge of the elastic and then go back and stitch along the inner edge of the elastic also stretching as you sew. If you prefer, you can sew a lightweight fabric casing to the wrong side of the towel and insert the elastic drawing it up to fit the size you want. Cut two strips of hook and loop tape about 3" long. Pin the rough (hook) side of one strip to the inside edge of the overlap on top of the elastic. Stitch around the hook tape to hold securely. Pin the soft (loop) side of one strip to the outside edge on the right side of the underlap. Stitch around that tape. Now place the corresponding pieces of hook and loop tape up against the stitched in place pieces of tape. Put the wrap on your body to help determine where to sew the corresponding pieces of tape. Pin those pieces where they should go and unhook them from the stitched tapes. Remove the wrap. Stitch around these tapes where you have them pinned. WOW! You just made a spa wrap! Now, for some designer touches, try these ideas: Add a large pocket cut from contrasting or matching fabric or even mesh fabric on the front. Monogram or use one of your embroidery designs on the pocket before applying it to the wrap. You could bind the outer edges of towel with fabric to match the pocket. If you decide to bind the outer edges of the towel, round the square corners first. It looks better and is easier to bind. See the following sewing tip to make a nice curve. Sewing Tip: Lay a dinner plate down at the corners of the towel lining up the edges of the plate with the edges of the towel. Draw the outer curve of the plate to get a very nice even curve. If you are using a plain towel, add a fun embroidery design using instructions to embroider on terry cloth to decorate your wrap. Applique a unique design on the spa wrap. If you prefer not to use hook and loop tape, use very large snaps or heavy duty gripper snaps to hold the wrap closed. You are the designer! Have fun with it! It just makes sense! 2006 Marian Lewis - All Rights Reserved

Gourmet Spices

By Nancy Carpay Some Uses of Gourmet Spices
In ancient times the word "spice" was usually applied to aromatically scented herbs used in cooking and for medicinal purposes. Today, the definition of "spice" is more widely described as imported, tropical herbal plants which are valued for their aromatic flavor and odor and have a multitude of uses. The spices most of us are inclined to use frequently fall into three categories: Culinary, Medicinal and Dietary Herbal Supplements. In Culinary uses: Spices are added to meats, condiments, confections, vegetables, beverages, vinegar and wines. Olive and grape seed oils, teas, and chocolate can also be classified as herbs in that they are also imported from tropical countries. Spices mixed into gourmet blends add much to the taste of many international dishes which have become common in our cuisines. Herbs added to oils used in cooking can make the difference between an ordinary meal and a gourmet one. In Medicinal uses: Herbs such as mint which contains menthol, and also herbs as basil, thyme, and sage are often used in over-the-counter medicines for sore throats, coughs, and bronchitis. Also, when herbs are combined with extracts from aloes, eucalyptus, camphor and benzoin make very effective salves and ointments for bruises, insect bites, wounds, minor burns, and minor skin irritations. In Dietary Herbal Supplements: Herbs in combinations offer prevention of illness to sometimes curing an ailment. Some combinations suppress appetite for weight loss or speed up metabolism. Some herbs help you get a good night's sleep, while others elevate you mood. Others control pain and some cleanse the body.
Spices and herbs are used extensively now because more people are health conscious and spices and herbs are more readily available than at any other time in history. The Hepatitis Epidemic

By Tony Isaacs Today, an estimated 5 million Americans are infected with Hepatitis C - and most of them don't know it. That is 1 out of every 50 people.....and some will be people you know. One out of every 10 Veterans is infected, 62% of Vietnam Vets have it. Three people with Hep C die every day, two of them are Veterans. Hepatitis C is considered an epidemic and is now killing more people than Aids/HIV...30,000 a year and it's going to get much worse. The number of adults seeking liver transplants for hepatitis C infection will skyrocket in the next 20 years. An estimated 10,000 to 30,000 Americans die from this disease each year. Deaths are estimated to increase because of the increasing risk of infection, and the resulting cirrhosis, portal hypertension, thrombocytopenia, bleeding from varices, and liver cancer. Five years ago, 20% of hepatitis C patients were candidates for liver transplantation and today the number has increased to about 50%. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), by the year 2008, the cases of decompensation will increase 279%, liver-related deaths 223% and the need for liver transplantation 528%. Considering that we don't have enough organs now and people die on transplant lists, far too many of those precious lives will be lost. For those fortunate enough to find a donor, the process costs roughly $300,000 during the first 3 months, and can be painful and incapacitating. Add to this the thousands of dollars for anti-rejection drugs and the costs of aftercare more frequent visits to health care facilities. The other option, debilitating and woefully ineffective chemo, runs into the tens of thousands of dollars and more and has success rates in the mere single digits. Hepatitis C is called the dragon, because it sleeps for many years and one day, suddenly, it wakes up and ends your life (people who got infected 20-30 years ago may just now find out). The Hepatitis C virus is very old and very smart.....it doesn't kill quickly like the old HIV virus or like the Ebola virus. Hepatitis C has chosen to infect the liver. The ONLY organ capable of regeneration. It simmers for many years, keeping its host alive. It is so smart it uses our own immune system against us. Nobody knows exactly where it came from. During World War II, an unlicensed yellow fever vaccine was released to immunize our troops who were going to the South Pacific. To stabilize the vaccine, scientists used serum from Australian Aboregenese, hoping they were immune to endemic illnesses and that immunity would then be passed to our troops. Years later, it was discovered that 50% of the Aboregenese had Hepatitis B and C. A study done by the Veteran's Administration later PROVED that over 320,000 of our troops were infected. Thousands of them fell ill with hepatitis and hospitalized or quarantined in their barracks. When they came back home, they were encouraged to donate blood. A monster, with the power to mutate, had just been unleashed. Hepatitis C is transmitted through blood only. That means blood transfusions with contaminated blood before 1992 (because blood was not screened), tatoos, body piercing, needle sticks, IV drugs with contaminated needles, manicures that made you bleed (instruments are not sterilized), sharing razors, toothbrushes, anything that could pass infected blood to your blood. Even doing IV drugs once could have given you the virus or sharing straws with someone that had nasal sores or bleeding. A mutating virus for which there is no vaccine. It has many strains and substrains. By the time they figure something about it, it's already mutated into something stronger. 70-75% of people have genotype 1, the strain most difficult to treat. 95% of Veterans who have Hep C have genotype 1. The success rate with traditional modern medicine treatment is only about 50% and treatment is a whole year and side effects from the medications are cruel. For Veterans, success rate is only 19%....and sadly, even that treatment is approved for only 11.8% of them. The Hepatitis C virus causes diabetes (40% of genotype 1 have diabetes), it affects the brain causing depression, it causes lung problems, neuropathy, fibromyalgia, Sjogren's, cardiac problems, skin problems, arthritis, stomach problems, anemia, fatigue, and of course, cirrhosis. After cirrhosis comes DECOMPENSATION. The liver stops working, the skin and sclera become yellow, your belly looks like you're pregnant, you're unable to process protein, you get anemic, confused, the kidneys stop working and many bleed to death. Many of the people that are infected already have severe liver damage and don't know it....and they are going to be looking at herbal products to treat the symptoms they are having. What many people do not know is that there are at least three excellent inexpensive supplements that can be used for hepatitis. First of all, an aqueous extract of the oleander plant commonly called "oleander soup" made according to the directions in the book "Cancer's Natural Enemy" has had excellent results in treating hepatitis-C. Secondly, colloidal silver has been used by a great many people who testify that it is second to none in treating hepatitis. And thirdly, there is an excellent herbal supplement treatment regimen for hepatitis that is all natural, inexpensive and extraordinarily effective. Most people in the United States are not familiar with the Berkson Clinical Study on Hepatitis-C, a study that was never published in the United States, despite Dr. Berkson's impressive credentials that include Rutgers, the Max Planck Institute and the Center for Disease Control (CDS) in Atlanta. It has been suggested that the real reason the study has never been published in the states is due to the fact that liver transplants are highly profitable for mainstreams medicine, costing over $300,000 in the first three months alone, plus many thousands of dollars afterwards for anti-rejection drugs and aftercare. In Doctor Berksons study, which was 100% effective in a limited study on advanced hepatitis-C patients who were facing either transplants or chemo, he used a combination of three commonly available and inexpensive natural supplements, along with healthy modificatioins in diet, exercise and lifestyle. And what are the supplements? Milk thistle (silymarin), alpha-lipoic acid and selenium - all commonly available and inexpensive. I have used milk thistle for years, after reading long ago that it was deemed effective at not only protecting the liver but also in regenerating damaged livers by the German E Commission (their equivalent of the FDA). Now I take all three supplements to help offset a fondness for another natural substance - blue agave (smile). In treating any disease or illness, it is usually an excellent idea to cleanse the body of toxins (toxins help promote disease and retard healing). A liver cleanse is a very good procedure to use to help treat hepatitis as well as a good one for anyone to use as part of a healthy anti-disease lifestyle. And, since good health begins in the gut, the same holds true for cleansing the colon. Liver and colon cleanses are widely available online and at retail natural health product outlets. By Anna Henningsgaard Since the days of Upton Sinclaires The Jungle, workplace injury law has improved to protect workers and repay them for injuries incurred at work. Departments like the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) have been developed to monitor working conditions and maintain a benchmark level of safety for workers. Not only is your employer responsible for providing a safe workplace, they must support you when you suffer injuries on the job site. OSHA penalizes companies for dangerous working conditions. These are some very strict regulations, and it is a good idea to contact a lawyer if you mean to hold your company responsible for injuries youve suffered. Since its inception in 1971, OSHA has helped to cut workplace fatalities by more than 60 percent and occupational injury and illness rates by 40 percent. In the past, workers had to fend for themselves. People working in dangerous industries were not paid when they had to take time off for injuries, even when the injuries happened at work! These employees who took on extra risk by working difficult and dangerous jobs were not necessarily paid more, so it was often the marginalized members of society such as recent immigrants who were forced to risk their lives daily just to get by. Modern standards, such as those established by OSHA, seek to make this abuse a thing of the past. Workplace injury and abuses still occur, however, especially if you dont know your rights. If you have been injured at work because your employer has not provided appropriate safety measures or you have suffered a workplace injury and were subsequently laid off or not paid for your recovery time, contact a lawyer right away. Divorce Lawyer Qualifications You Set the Bar

By Steven Carlson Assuming that you have several prospective divorce lawyers in mind to handle your divorce or custody case, you must investigate the qualifications of each attorney. Before investigating the qualifications of each attorney, you would be wise to set the bar on the minimum qualifications that are acceptable to you. An attorneys qualifications in the following 5 areas will help you in your investigation.

(1) Percentage of practice devoted to family law
(2) Years of experience
(3) Certified specialist
(4) Law school and education
(5) Memberships

Percentage of practice devoted to family law
An attorneys percentage of practice devoted to family law will help you assess how much experience and expertise he/she has with divorce and custody related issues. An attorney whose practice is 100% devoted to family law issues, such as divorce and custody, will likely have more expertise and familiarity with handling such cases than an attorney whose practice is not 100% devoted to family law.

Years of experience
An attorney is often valued by the number of years of experience they have in a particular area of law. The more years of experience an attorney has in family law, the more they can typically demand for his/her fees. Further, the more years of experience an attorney has with divorce or custody cases, the more likely he/she has worked on a case similar to yours and help you learn what you can likely expect and what the costs will be.

Certified specialist
Is the attorney a certified family law specialist? Some attorneys may seek to become a certified family law specialist by demonstrating extensive experience and testing in the field of family law. There are certainly attorneys with experienced and expertise in family law that have not sought out to become a certified family law specialist. Attorneys that advertise themselves as certified specialists may demand a higher fee.

Education
The fact that an attorney graduated from a prestigious law school does not necessarily guarantee that he/she is more qualified and more experienced in the field of family law than an attorney that has not graduated from a prestigious law school. The law school is however still something worth exploring because it may demonstrate how serious, dedicated, and committed the attorney was to his/her education. Additionally, some attorneys may have various education such as being a Certified Public Accountant or Licensed Clinical Psychologist. You will need to determine the value of the different education an attorney has and the cost that may go along with it.

Memberships
An attorney that has taken interest in the field of family law will often have memberships to organizations in the field of family law. Some memberships are available to any lawyer and some memberships are more difficult to obtain. An attorney that does not have any memberships to organizations in the field of law can often create doubt in the consumers mind about their interest in that field.

The information above about an attorneys qualifications can often be found through the State Bar website or through the Bar Association. As you seek to know more about an attorneys qualifications, it is ultimately up to you to investigate the attorneys qualifications and set the bar on the minimum qualifications that are acceptable to you. 2006 Child Custody Coach Child Custody Coach supplies information, online materials, and coaching services to parents in the field of child custody, namely, divorce, child custody and visitation, child custody evaluations, 730 evaluations, parenting, and all issues related to child custody and divorce. So Many Styles-So Many Sunrooms

By Andrew Caxton A sunroom makes an ideal addition to practically any home. It is always pleasant to sit in an air-conditioned room, with light pouring in on all sides - but not too brightly - and a view of grass, garden, or trees, but free of the oppressive heat or annoying insects that can sometimes ruin a perfect day. There are roughly five kinds of sunrooms, and what differentiates them is the type of roof that they have. Your 'average' sunroom consists of window glass all around, of course, all of the same size, and a flat roof, usually of some opaque material so that the sun is not actually visible through the roof. The 'Cathedral' sunroom is one in which the ceiling is vaulted. This makes the room appear very large, and allows for design features like front trapezoid transoms to really enhance the look of the room from both inside and out. A vaulted ceiling also helps in preventing the build-up of rain or snow. The 'split-level' sunroom, or California, as it is also known, has a roof that is somewhat staggered. One half of it slopes upward, the other half slopes up to meet it at not quite as sharp an angle, and glass panels bridge the distance between the two. This allows more light to enter the sunroom and of course gives the sunroom a striking look. The 'solarium' is a room in which both the walls and ceiling are made of glass, and the roof has a curved glass eave...which makes it a nice room in which to watch the stars at night, as well as enjoying the sunlight during the day. Finally, the 'Conservatory' is a room with a rather old-fashioned, ornate look to its frame, designed in an Edwardian or Victorian manner, with a glass ceiling as well. The frames for the sunroom can be made of any material, from wood to aluminum to vinyl, but you'll want to get the best quality possible for your budget. A sunroom represents a significant investment in your home - the value of your home will probably go up at your next assessment, as will your taxes. Great care must be taken with the glass quality. You don't want unfiltered sunlight bearing down into your room. The white glare will make seeing extremely uncomfortable. You'll want windows that block out most of the sunlight, as well as the harmful UV rays which fade furniture. You'll want windows that are insulated and that can keep both hot and cold weather out...and warm temperatures in. What To Look For In Sunroom Design There are quite a few companies on the web who have galleries of their sunrooms. Take a look at these. Do you have a friend, family member, co-worker or neighbor who has a sunroom? Talk to them about it. Ask them about their problems. (And if they haven't owned their sunroom for a complete four seasons, ask other people who have.) The type of sunroom you choose will depend on the type of person you are. If you want a quiet room to retreat and relax, you'll perhaps want a conservatory. If you want a room where kids can gather and play, your 'average' sunroom might be the best bet. Go carefully, do your research, then go out and get a sunroom. Andrew Caxton is a journalist who has written more articles and newsletters on this subject for http://www.allsunrooms.com . Find more publications about sunroom enclosures at his website. Lay-off or Dismissal, under Ontario Law - It All Amounts to the Same Thing

By Bram Lecker Somehow, it has a better ring to it. For most Employees being Laid-off is a great deal easier to swallow after long and faithful years of service than a pink slip with the words Terminated, Dismissed or Fired. Certainly, the term Laid-off has connotations that the decision was reached due to circumstances beyond the control of the Employer and with no fault of the Employee. The lack of cash flow and shortage of work are the causes of doom, not the Employees performance, or so the story is told. However, this cloud has so silver lining. In fact, many Employers prefer to characterize the termination of employment as a lay-off out of genuine sincerity and an attempt to lessen the emotional pain of losing ones job. However, there is often a darker hidden agenda to this characterization, designed to guard the Employers interests at the expense of the Employees rights: On the one hand, there is a subtle message. If the Employee toughs it out, accepts the situation, keeps the peace and above all, does not seek legal help, the situation may be temporary and there will be a chance of recall, at which time the status quo will be re-instated. It is only natural to hope that the upheaval is only temporary. Especially after long service, no one wants to set out on the unknown of a new relationship. When the weeks melt into months, and no recall arrives, the Employee slowly realizes that he or she has been duped into a false expectation. In the meantime, a precious opportunity has been lost in seeking alternate permanent employment and most importantly, severance entitlements.
With regard to the latter, the Employers message is much less subtle. Call the Labour Board Then an Employee is told after enquiring about entitlements We can lay you off for 13 weeks and we dont have to pay you a dime. In the interim, as the bills mount, the Employment Insurance wanes and nothing positive is done to obtain his/her rights, the Employee waits like a hopeful jilted lover. Of course the call never comes. If the Employer had been up front enough to tell it like it is, being indefinitely laid off is a euphemism for being fired without cause, a bitter pill with a sugar coating. There is a light at the end of the tunnel. In Ontario as in all Provinces in Canada, every Employee who is terminated without just cause is entitled to reasonable notice of termination, or severance In lieu of notice. The amount of notice is based primarily on 3 main factors established over 30 years of judicial decisions known as Common Law: age, position and length of service. There is no special status for Lay-off under Common Law; a lay-off is a breach of the Employees unwritten contract. Any non-unionized Employee can claim compensation for wrongful dismissal from the day he receives an indefinite lay-off notice and the Employer refuses or is unable to provide the date of recall. What about the 13 week rule? It is true that the Employment Standards Act, 2000 (The Ministry of Labour The Labour Board) provides for a 13 week lay-off period during which a moratorium is imposed upon the actions of Employment Standards Officers from seeking compensation under the Act. However, this only applies to the minimum statutory termination and severance rights set out in the legislation. The important thing to remember is that the Employees Common Law entitlements to claim for wrongful dismissal based on age, length of service and status override the minimums under the Employment Standards Act, 2000. For example, a mid-management Employee, age 50 with 12 years seniority, is entitled to 8 weeks under the Employment Standards Act, 2000, but would be entitled to 12 months at common law. In fact, an Employee who is Laid-off without recall may have greater rights than the circumstances of an ordinary dismissal. In recent decision of Cagigal v. Mill Dining Lounge Ltd. a Manager of a restaurant with three (3) years of service sued for wrongful dismissal. He had been laid off in March but only told by the Employer in August that there was no longer a job for him. The Ontario Court of Justice found that the Employer did not act reasonably in failing to inform the Employee that he would be dismissed during the period of lay-off. Accordingly, the five (5) months of lay-off were added to the three (3) months of normal severance for a total of eight (8). The court, in effect, said that it is unfair to lead someone along when there is little or no possibility of recall. This notion was expanded upon by the Supreme Court of Canada in the famous Wallace decision. Taking its lead , in Ontario and other Canadian jurisdictions the Courts have gone even further. In the leading case of Martellacci v CFX Inc. * for example, the Court definitively upheld the principal that the 13 week rule is no bar to wrongful dismissal and decisively penalized an Employer for refusing to provide any compensation when it refused to return the laid off Employee (a Purchasing manager) to her pre lay off position. In summary, Employers must inform their laid-off Employees of their true intentions so that the Employees can get on with life and find suitable alternate employment, if not, the consequences will be an enhanced severance package for bad faith dismissal. A rose by any other name smells as sweet, except in Employment Law. If the Employers intentions are to lessen the psychological blow of a dismissal, the way not to do it is by trying to mislead the Employee into believing that a lay-off has some special status and thereby avoiding its obligations. If the Employer must reduce the workforce for legitimate financial reasons, most Employees will understand. What they cannot understand and the Courts will not tolerate, is some less than straight-forward attempt to characterize a lay-off as anything else than what it is, a termination of employment for which the Employee is entitled to notice or compensation on termination when they need it most. * the writer was Counsel for the Employee in this matter. Bram A. Lecker, B.A. LLB. as an experienced employment lawyer in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, is dedicated to the employees seeking their rights in employment matters, wrongful dismissal, constructive dismissal, harassment in the workplace, benefits, employment contracts and severance. Online Chess: Play Anyone, Anywhere, Anytime!

By Eriani Doyel Have you ever played online chess? If you havent you should know that it is a fun way to build your chess skills while enjoying one of the greatest games ever invented. The internet has revolutionized the way we do everything, even the way we enjoy our leisure time. Online chess is just one more example of this. You can play online chess with someone sitting in the house next door, or someone who lives continents away. Even though many people prefer to play chess with someone face to face, online chess is one way that you can play anytime of day or night without searching for a partner. One of the first considerations when you are looking for an online chess site is the price. There are quite a few free chess sites where you can play games and even in tournaments for free. This is a very good option if you are still a beginning chess player or if you are looking for an online chess site for your child (there are kid-specific sites as well.) However the graphics and features on these sites may not be quite as advanced as those on the paid subscription sites. These online chess sites may also have more ads and pop-ups, so you would need to make sure that they are safe for children if it is not a child-specific site. Most paid subscription sites will offer a trial period of a certain amount of days or games played. You may be required to enter credit card information when you apply for the trial period, so this is something you may want to think carefully about. A paid subscription to an online chess site can cost anywhere from under $10 up to $60 a year. Some subscriptions (both free and paid) have premium membership plans which will have an additional charge. These sites are good if you are really a serious player an you want better features and graphics with fewer advertisements. One note: some sites will allow you to search around the site without a log-in or registration of any kind, while others do not allow you to access many of the features unless you give them some personal information first. You may want to look at a site which reviews chess sites to see which ones have the features you are looking for. Then, you can play in tournaments, play the same player over and over, or play a random player. On many sites you can choose the skill level at which you want to play. 6 Maintenance Tips for Water Heaters

By John Haynes Maintenance Tip #1 Preparing the water heater Turn off the power if its an electric water heater.
Turn off the water to the water heater by closing the valve on the cold water line. Its located on top of the water heater. The cold line is always to the right.
Open a hot water tap inside the house. Air pressure will come out of the tap.
Open the drain valve located at the bottom of the water heater. It looks like a
hose bibb. Let a gallon or more out of the water heater.
Do not allow anyone to use hot water for the time you are working on the water heater. Maintenance Tip #2 Why do maintenance? The information in this article isn't public knowledge. It should be. It is also very difficult to find any maintenance information about water heaters anywhere.
These tips will make it more heat efficient, and far less capable of causing problems down the road. Most maintenance is quick and cheap as well. Maintenance Tip #3 Access of the hexhead On top of every tank-type water heater lies a hexagonal-shaped head. It is either readily seen or it is not. If it is not, then this is a chance for improving the future maintenance of the water heater.
Drill very shallow 1/4 inch holes one at a time through the sheet metal top of the water heater. Do not drill into the water heater or it will be unusable. Once a hole is drilled use a thin object such as a pen or screwdriver to poke inside and locate the hex head.
When located, use tin snips to peel back the tin metal at the top and remove any foam insulation near the hex head. Use tape to cover up the sharp edges of the tin metal to avoid cutting your hands. Pat the edges of tin down with a hammer as well. Now your anode rods inside your tank can be maintained more easily. That's because they are attached to the hex head. Maintenance Tip #4 When can a gas water heater receive maintenance? Turn the control dial to PILOT. Look inside the combustion chamber once the flame is out with a flashlight. Do you see any water, rust, or water marks? If yes, then you'll probably need to invest in a brand new water heater altogether. If no, then maintenance of the water heater will be an option for you. Now look on top of the gas water heater at the chimney baffle. It's the long piece of tin metal that extends to the ceiling usually. Does it have any rust on it? If yes, then you have poor ventilation in the room with the water heater in it. Call a plumber for advice on your situation, because you don't want a hole rusted through the tin metal. If no rust appears, maintenance can be performed. Maintenance Tip #5 Recording the maintenance you do. Put a large sticker on the outside of the water heater, but don't put it on anything important. Record the date when you check or replace the anode rods. Also write down any time you flush the tank out. If any new parts are used, write the part and date down too. Maintenance Tip #6 Anode inspection Check your anode rods every two or three years. Every once in awhile the anode location is written on the instruction on the outside of the water heater.
You may have a combination anode rod. This means that it is attached to the hot water outlet on top of the water heater. To find out if you have one, disconnect the plumbing at the water heater and the hot water outlet, which is always on the left. Poke a clothes hanger wire straight down inside the hole. If it hits something a few inches inside, you have a combination anode. Use a pipe wrench to remove the combination anode. You may have an anode rod underneath a plastic disc only 2 inches wide or less. Pop the disc and then use a 1-1/16 inch socket wrench, a 3/4 drive, and a breaker bar. Any person may have to steady the tank when you unscrew the anode rod. Check out http://www.waterheater-info.com or contact online purchase ultram
